Master Bedroom Closet Overhaul under $100

The master bedroom closets were the lowest on my priority list to update given that my husband and I were the only ones to every see them. OH! how I despised them so. The day we moved in I ended up just emptying our moving boxes directly into each closet and closed the doors.

They needed a good cleaning and organization.

One day this winter feeling trapped inside I couldn't take it anymore and emptied them out and started to prepare them for a makeover. The color inside combined with the dark 70's bi-fold doors and outdated brass handles had to GO.

The original color was closer to antique white but sure felt more like dingy yellow to me. Very uninspiring. My clothes were getting lost in the shadows of this closet and I knew that a true white satin paint would help brighten things up.

I literally painted everything I possibly could including the shelves, wall mounts, ceiling and trim. I didn't use any primer since the original color was already fairly light. I used a generic interior white satin paint, nothing fancy since my clothes would cover most of it up anyway. I ended up applying 3 coats of paint. The paint cost $20 from Menards.

The closet rods I sanded down in the garage and stained a nice dark walnut with Minwax Wood Finish Penetrating Stain. I applied 2 coats of the stain to get a real nice deep color. The stain was $8 and will last forever. I have used it already on many projects!

The bi-fold closet doors was another garage project since the sanding process tends to make quite a dusty mess. I gladly removed the 1970's brass hardware and sanded all sides of the doors with 250 grade sandpaper. I then applied 2 coats of interior wood primer since they were such a dark color to start with. I finished with my go-to Sherwin Williams Snowbound White enamel paint which was not the color I used on the interior (due to cost) but you would never know. The final touch was some nice sturdy matte black handles.

Here is the final closet view before I put the doors back on and painted the outside trim.

Now was the fun part. I but some nice new canvas baskets to hold my purses, scarves and belts. I bought a shoe rack from Target that fit perfectly in the far end of my very wide closet instead of storing my shoes in the upper shelves of the closet. I can actually see my shoes now it's nuts. I went through all of my hangers and replaced them with non-slip hangers. I also totally splurged and bought some boot shapers to keep my tall boots from flopping over (I know I am wild). I feel like such an adult with this closet now. I love it.

Overall, this project took me about a week and cost me around $100 only because I had way too much fun buying items to help me organize it!

Next project for my closet will be to figure out how to add a light inside to help me see my clothes better. I may need an electrician for that though.
