Home School Free Desk Flip for $20

Like most everyone we needed to change our school routine this year a bit. As we went back to school this year we quickly realized we would need a dedicated at home school work space for our first grader.

Luckily, my mom spotted this solid wood desk at the end of a driveway for free (!) and hand delivered it to my driveway (at no cost!). It was a bit bigger and more old school than I would have picked out for my daughter but did I mention it was free?! Also, I can't help myself when I smell a project.

Since this was going in my daughters room I let her pick out any color she wanted to paint it - Sherwin Williams Nifty Turquoise ($20) was the winner.

I removed the hardware and sanded down the entire desk.

While I waited for the three coats of Nifty Turquoise to properly dry I worked up a creative way to update the old brass hardware.

I really wanted to replace the hardware to modernize the desk a bit but that was going to add more than I was willing to spend on this project so stuck with the original. At the very least, I could update that outdated hardware.

I used an old piece of trim to tie each handle and knob in order to give myself the freedom to spray-paint at any angle.

I sprayed everything with my go-to Farmhouse Matte Black spray-paint from Rust-oleum.

In the end, I spent $20 and a weekend getting this FREE desk into 1st grade learning shape. I did splurge on the desk chair which I got on Facebook Marketplace for $5!

My daughter absolutely loves having her own space to work. MOM WIN!
