Board and Batten Master Bedroom Accent Wall

Loving our new board and batten master bedroom accent wall upgrade! To get here it was actually quite a simple DIY exercise that I would do again the first chance I get on another blank canvas wall in our home.

This is the before photo! This wall was truly a blank slate for us and it seemed perfect for our first accent wall attempt.

Headed to Menards and purchased some pre-primed 1 x 3 MDF strips. We went for pre-primed (which costs a bit more) but it's worth the time it saves you on the back end. Up to you on how much you prefer to DIY.

First step was to pull out the original trim piece that you may remember I just painted back in January! This is apparently what happens when you choose to paint trim attached to the wall. You get a lot of carpet with it 😂

Next we installed the new MDF base board trim piece with the plan to build up from there. We used a nail gun to attached the boards to the wall.

What you may not know is that our master bedroom has an awkward sliding glass door in it. We don't love it but have to live with it. However, on this day that door came in real handy for our quick MDF cuts we needed to make for this project.

Figured out the height was wanted by eyeballing it! That is the scientific term too 😄 We basically knew we wanted it be higher than our headboard and went from there.

Once we had the base and top framed out we laid out our MDF strips to try to figure out our preferred spacing and ultimately how many boards we would need for this project. We also wanted to try to work around the few outlets on the wall.

TA-DA! We ended making the spacing work perfectly by forcing it too. It's not a perfect round number for spacing but it worked so we went with it! We ended up with more MDF boards than we needed which is alright by me because now I can use those for another accent wall project down the road 👏

Easiest part of this project is OVER! Now for the hard part, picking a paint color and figuring out new bedding.

We had it narrowed down to these three options and ended up not going with any of them! When I went to #sherwinwilliams to pick out my color I fell in love with ANOTHER color and went with it. Picking colors are real tricky for me.

At the very last minute we decided to add a few decoration trim pieces to the top of the board and batten to make it feel more finished and intentional.

The next step was to fill ALL of the nail holes with wood filler. After the wood filler dries you need to sand it down until smooth before moving onto painting.

Then I taped it up for painting and CAULKING. Not my favorite job but it had to be down. Every board got caulked with white paintable caulk. Luckily it doesn't have to be perfect but man it sure takes some patience.

Ultimately, I wanted a shade of green but couldn't walk away from gray either. I ended up with Sherwin Williams Illusive Green and could not be more happy. What do you think?

It took me another three weeks to find the right bedding and additional throw pillows. I found the bedding from #PotteryBarn Gray Wheaton Striped Duvet Cover . Throw pillows are from Target and Home Goods.

Still working on finding the right side tables and lamps! Open to your suggestions. I am thinking I really want something vintage and probably natural wood.

I love how this board and batten wall gives my master bedroom depth and texture and inspires me so much more to decorate and layer on new pieces.
